What is Liposuction?
Liposuction (fat removal) is a surgical aesthetic procedure in which accumulated fat tissue in specific areas of the body is aspirated and removed through thin cannulas. Targeting stubborn fat deposits that cannot be dissolved through diet and exercise, liposuction is one of the most widely performed plastic surgery operations in the world for body contouring.
Within the scope of the plastic surgery services we offer at EFC Clinic, personalised liposuction planning is carried out by our experienced surgeons.
Is Liposuction a Weight Loss Method?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions about liposuction. Liposuction is not a weight loss method; it is a body shaping and contouring procedure. Ideal candidates are generally individuals who are at a healthy weight but experience localised fat deposits in areas such as the waist, abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, arms or face.
Liposuction Techniques
Classic (Tumescent) Liposuction
The most widely used technique. Before the procedure, a tumescent solution (a mixture of saline, adrenaline and local anaesthetic) is injected into the fatty tissue. This solution makes the fat easier to aspirate and minimises bleeding and pain. Fat cells are then removed by aspiration through thin cannulas.
Vaser Liposuction (Ultrasonic)
Fat cells are first liquefied using ultrasonic energy, then aspirated. Damage to surrounding tissues is minimised. Particularly preferred for fibrous fatty tissue and sensitive areas (back, male chest). Its contribution to skin tightening is greater than the classic method.
Laser Liposuction
Fat cells are melted using laser energy and aspirated. It is the technique with the most pronounced skin tightening effect. Preferred for small amounts of fat or cases where skin sagging is prominent.
Hi-Def (High Definition) Liposuction
An advanced technique in which fat is shaped very precisely to highlight the athletic appearance of abdominal muscles, chest muscles or arms. Applied in combination with Vaser technology. Visit our plastic surgery page for more information.
Which Areas Can Liposuction be Applied To?
Liposuction can be applied to many different areas of the body:
- Abdomen and waist area
- Hips and flanks (love handles)
- Inner and outer thighs
- Around the knees
- Arms (inner arm area)
- Back and bra line
- Area under the chest
- Under the chin and facial contouring
- Gynaecomastia (male breast) in men
Liposuction with Fat Transfer (BBL)
Fat cells collected during liposuction can be purified and injected into other areas. Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is the most popular application of this method. Fat transfer is also used in facial rejuvenation, hand rejuvenation and breast augmentation procedures.
Who is a Suitable Candidate for Liposuction?
The ideal liposuction candidate is:
- Aged 18 or over with good general health
- Close to their ideal weight but with localised fat deposits
- With sufficient skin elasticity (no excessive sagging)
- With realistic expectations
- A non-smoker or willing to quit
Excessive overweight, blood clotting disorders or uncontrolled chronic diseases may constitute contraindications for liposuction.
Liposuction Operation Process
1. Consultation and Planning
Our surgeon evaluates the target areas, fat volume and skin quality to determine the most appropriate technique. Liposuction can be applied to multiple areas in the same session.
2. Operation
Performed under general or local anaesthesia, the procedure can take 1-4 hours depending on the number of areas treated. Patients are generally discharged on the same day or the following day.
3. Recovery Process
Swelling, bruising and mild pain in the first few days are expected. A special compression garment is recommended for 4-6 weeks. Return to light work is possible within 3-5 days and to strenuous physical activity within 4-6 weeks. The final result emerges within 3-6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do the fat cells removed by liposuction come back?
Fat cells removed by liposuction are permanently eliminated. However, remaining fat cells can enlarge in the event of weight gain. Results can be made permanent with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
Can liposuction and tummy tuck be performed in the same session?
Yes. Especially when there is both excess fat and skin sagging in the abdominal area, liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) combination can be applied in the same session.
How many kilograms of fat does liposuction remove?
Generally 3-5 litres of fat can be aspirated within safe limits. This amount is not measured in kilograms; the main goal is volume and shaping.
How long does the recovery process take?
Return to social life is generally possible within 5-7 days. Full recovery and the final result emerge within 3-6 months.
Does liposuction leave scars?
Small incisions (3-5 mm) where cannulas are placed are generally made in hidden areas and become virtually invisible over time.
